SUMMARY:Ash Gilman - Cranswick\, an overview and Regenerative Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:Ash\, Director of Agricultural Strategy at Cranswick will address the club on the company and how it is championing soil health and sustainability on its farms. \n“I’ve been with Cranswick since 2017\, but my entire career to date has been focused on driving sustainable change within agriculture. I’m especially passionate about soil health – it’s one of the most important factors in farming and a key part of my job is ensuring the long-term soil resilience we need to keep on growing food. And we’re making a difference. At Wayland Farms – our Norfolk-based outdoor-reared pig business – for example\, we routinely increase soil organic matter under our outdoor breeding units by 10% over a two year period. In addition\, we are now carbon mapping a percentage of our fields using the latest technology.” \nThis will be at Ufford Park\, on November 6th 2025  7.30 pm start with Buffet to follow. \nFor catering purposes could you please let Andrew know if you plan to attend by Monday 20/10/2025

SUMMARY:Annual Farm Walk and BBQ
DESCRIPTION:This years farm walk is to be held at Elveden Estates on June 5th 2025. \nThe tour will start at 4 pm and finish around 7pm hosted by Andrew Blenkiron – Managing Director of Elveden farms Ltd and will be followed by a buffet at the Elveden Inn. \nAs usual there will be no cost to members for the event but guests will be charged at £25 to cover the cost of food.  Numbers will be limited however to 42 as this is the maximum the estate trailer can carry.  Booking early is therefore essential and will be on a first come first served basis. \nA brief summary of the estate is below. \nElveden is a 22\,500 acre country estate\, of which over 10\,000 acres is farmland.  This makes us the largest ring-fenced arable farm in lowland Britain.  The land at Elveden was transformed for agricultural use in 1927 by Rupert Guinness\, great great grandson of Arthur Guinness (founder of the Guinness brewery.)  The field layout he implemented is still virtually identical today\, with large fields of up to 100 acres in size that are well-suited to today’s powerful machinery\, and pays testament to his forward-thinking attitude. \nWe are passionate about environmentally-responsible farming and work hard to ensure that biodiversity at Elveden thrives alongside our farming practices.  Read more about our Conservation work here. \nOur farm specialises in the production of vegetables especially potatoes\, onions\, carrots and parsnips which dominate our farming.  Around 6% of the UK’s onions are grown at Elveden!  We also grow cereals such as rye\, barley and wheat to balance the rotation\, ensuring our soils remain fertile and productive for generations to come.  More rye is grown at Elveden than on any other farm in the UK and we are major suppliers to the nation’s crisp-bread bakers. \nRead more about our produce marketing businesses\, Garden of Elveden (potatoes) and Elveden Produce Ltd (onions). \nConsistency of quality and volume is achieved through the application of the highest levels of science and technology. Irrigation\, mechanisation and a highly skilled production team are key to our success.

SUMMARY:Farm Walk and BBQ
DESCRIPTION:It may not feel like summer yet but in a few weeks’ time we will be having our Annual Farm Walk and B B Q kindly hosted this year by Boxford Suffolk Farms\, Hill Farm\, Brick Kiln Hill\, BOXFORD\, Suffolk. CO10 5NY. Commencing at 5.00 p.m. on Thursday 9th May. \nThe “Boxford Group” of companies includes Boxford Farms\, Peake Fruit – where they store\, pack and market their own fruit\, and the beautiful Stoke by Nayland Hotel\, Golf & Spa. The Peake family were pioneering entrepreneurs who diversified to succeed. They created Copella apple juice in 1969 by using their small and uneven shaped fruit. This business as it grew was later sold to Tropicana UK in 1997. Bill and Devora Peake also created two championship golf courses and a clubhouse in the 1970s\, which has since been developed by the next generation into the Stoke by Nayland Resort. \nWhat’s grown on Boxford Farms \nOn a branch\, on a plant\, or in the ground. They’ve diversified their fruit production and currently grow a variety of top\, stone and soft fruit as well as asparagus and rhubarb. As they are situated in a hot and dry area of the UK (usually)\, they can plant well-flavoured\, extended production strawberries\, raspberries and blueberries\, whilst also growing rhubarb\, plums and cherries. This is in addition to 22 different varieties of apple\, which are grown in the most modern orchards which provide rare and valuable habitats for wildlife. They use the latest technology in automated intelligent irrigation systems which closely matches the needs of the plants\, and\, with an emphasis on ensuring soil health and biodiversity in the orchards\, they have also implemented various strategies such as Predasect insect houses and wild flower nectar mixes for orchard borders. They have invested heavily into Bi-baum™ twin-stem trees which offer a more reliable\, cost-effective way of growing fruit\, and their hail nets\, rain-covers and poly-tunnels guarantee that the crop is picked and not wasted. \nAs recently as 2022  Boxford Suffolk Farms introduced a new Apple variety to the market- and as their website declares” we are confident that Magic StarTM will be the best apple you will taste (certainly better than a particular pink apple out there) with the added advantage that it is grown in Suffolk\, UK. It is sweet but with a complex apple flavour\, perfectly juicy\, and will store really well in your fridge or fruit bowl”. \nAll of the above hard work has contributed to the farm winning two national awards in the past few years – the Top Fruit Grower of the Year\, and Soft Fruit Grower of the Year. \nThe farm also has an on-farm AD plant which produces 750kwh of electricity and 750kW of heat – they are turning maize\, out-graded fruit and apple pomace into energy\, powering cold stores and farm buildings\, whilst drying applewood to be sold as logs or other wood to be used to heat either the hotel or glasshouse in their 6 biomass boilers. \nThe committee hopes that you will come along and support the evening. It is always interesting to see how other businesses operate and not many of us will be familiar with commercial fruit growing in the 21st Century. Friends and guests are very welcome to attend. \nThe evening concludes at approximately 7.00 p.m. with a light supper provided by our regular team at Monarch Catering – we should be served fresh strawberries (grown on the farm) and cream as a dessert. \nThe event is free to Members\, but a charge of £15.00/ head will be made to non-members and guests. \nPlease email Alan.Gray@originfertilisers.co.uk if you would like to attend by Friday 3rd May at the latest. \n

What we do know is that they are now one of the largest privately owned farms in the country and through investment in new technology and perhaps looking at challenges through fresh eyes are making big strides in the agricultural world. \nDaniel is a Newcastle University Graduate who spent time working for G’s Fresh Produce both in the UK and in the USA before joining Dyson Farming in 2022. He is acutely aware that quality produce and a strong provenance are key factors for creating branding and building relationships with retailers. \nWe are extremely fortunate to have secured a visit from Daniel in his very busy schedule. I am sure the evening will be enthralling and one not to miss for any entrepreneurial farmer and business- person. \nFollowing Daniel’s presentation a finger buffet will be served at a cost of £15.00/ head.

SUMMARY:Rooted: Stories of Life\, Land and a Farming Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 22nd February evening meeting at Fynn Valley Golf Club for a buffet 7:30pm. \nWe welcome Barrister\, Farmer and Author Sarah Langford to the February meeting of The Club. Sarah published her first book in 2018\, In Your Defence: Stories of Life and Law.  This soon became a bestseller. Detailing stories of her career as a city Barrister in London. \nHer Husband the former Conservative MP Ben Gummer had lost his seat at the 2017 snap general-election and at that time they left The City to take on the small family farm just outside Debenham. Sarah turned her hand to farming\, her Grandfather and Uncle were farmers. Farming is in her blood. She admits that there’s  an extraordinary arrogance in me coming in and saying “well I’ve just decided to have a go at farming and I think this is how it should be done”\, but she discovered an industry beleaguered with the challenges of climate change\, Brexit and falling incomes\, farmers faced accusations of ecological mismanagement from a hostile media and public. But as Sarah looked to them to teach her about the land\, she also found a new generation of farmers on a path of regenerative change. \nIn her second book Rooted– stories of life\, land and a farming revolution published in March of last year Sarah weaves her own story around these farmers – from dairy to arable\, traditional to experimental – who taught her what being a farmer means. Intimate and moving\, these stories shine a light on the human side of modern farming\, and show us how land connects us all\, not only in terms of global sustainability but in our relationships with our physical and mental health\, our communities\, our planet and ourselves. \nAn authentic\, beautifully written portrait of 21st Century farming\, this deeply personal account puts a powerful case: that the task of restoring our earth and ensuring a sustainable future both for our food and ourselves\, lies in the hands of those who live closest to the land. \nSarah recognises that ” Food is only going to get more expensive\, she adds — and it needs to. “A chicken should not cost less than a pint of beer. It’s too cheap in an ecological respect\, in a nutritional respect; but it’s too cheap in a human respect.” \nAccording to the Times There’s light tension between Langford and her contractor (our Chairman Richard Scott) — “He’s never had to farm without the ability to get a solution off a shelf” — but mutual respect. \nWe look forward to what Sarah really has to say- do join us for what will be a thought provoking and fascinating evening.
